Cultivate Summer Travels 2014

It's been a busy summer for us at Cultivate, but we still managed to get out of town for a little rest and relaxation. From New Orleans to Los Angeles, Portland and Colorado, here are a few of our vacation highlights:

I took two awesome trips this summer, to New York City and Portland, with the highlights of both being food-related (is that surprising?). In NYC, my husband and I visited some of our favorite old haunts - from Chinatown to Astoria - and checked out some new spots we’ve been dying to try. Our meal at Nomad was one of the top 5 culinary experiences of my life. Three weeks later, we trekked to Portland for a friend’s wedding which took place lakeside in the woods, hard to beat that setting. Similarly, that trip was also highlighted by the food – i.e. doughnuts, Thai chicken wings, and excessive amounts of coffee & beer. If you’re ever in Portland (or NY), do yourself a favor and eat at Pok Pok.

A highlight for me this summer was traveling to New Orleans for a wedding in late May. We stayed in the Garden District at a charming bed & breakfast on Saint Charles and had an epic four hour lunch at Galatoire's in the quarter, with some of the best food and company I’ve experienced all summer.

I recently traveled to Durango, Colorado and had an amazing time. One day we rented a car and drove two hours to Telluride – a small resort town that’s definitely worth checking out. Once in town, we took a 13-minute gondola ride which offered breathtaking 365 degree views of the San Juan Mountains. We had a picnic at the top of the mountain and spent the rest of the afternoon exploring Main Street and a quaint farmers market. The rest of the weekend was spent in Durango, where we floated the Animas River, checked out local brewery Ska Brewing and kept our eyes peeled for Colorado wildlife!

The Sprague family had a nice little reprieve from the hot Texas sun with a mid-July escape to beautiful southern California. In town for a wedding in Montecito, we extended the trip to celebrate my son James’ 5th birthday in Los Angeles where he was born. We had a blast on the beach in Santa Monica and in cool (yes, it was quite chilly) Santa Barbara but what we loved most was staying in our old neighborhood in Los Feliz. It’s kind of like Austin’s South Congress or Bouldin neighborhood only more tucked away at the foot of great hiking in Griffith Park. James and his sister enjoyed riding ponies in the park, visiting the Griffith Park Observatory, California Science Center and La Brea Tar pits. My husband and I enjoyed good food and really great Cali wine.

I was fortunate enough to take two beach vacations this summer, one with my family to Pensacola, Florida and another with just my husband to St. Barths. I'm also looking forward to traveling to Rimini, Italy with Teo Gelato in a few short weeks. Stay tuned for a recap on the Gelato World Tour and my other travels abroad!
